Earlier this month, we said goodbye to the one and only Queen Ruthie. It’s taken us time to find the words for what she meant to us.
At 14–15 years old, Ruthie had more than earned her crown. But it wasn’t her age that made her royalty. It was simply who she was.
Rescued from a hoarding case, Ruthie came to us through wonderful fosters who gave her the safety, care, and love she deserved. She had been with us since Sam’s Place opened in March 2025. She wasn’t just part of the rescue; she was part of its foundation.
If you follow us on social media, you’ve seen her often. Ruthie was our HR department, manager, supervisor, quality control inspector, and unquestioned ruler of everything she surveyed. She could fill a room without demanding attention, though she often demanded it. Everyone knew who was in charge, and we were happy to let it be her.
Through new dogs, new faces, hard days, and happy endings, Ruthie was our constant. Watching. Supervising. Keeping us company. Getting into trouble. Jumping when she shouldn’t. Reminding us, in her wonderfully stubborn way, that this was her rescue and we were fortunate to work for her.
Over the past several months, we watched our Queen slow down. Summer was especially difficult. We knew this day was coming, but there is no way to prepare your heart for losing someone so woven into your everyday life.
When Ruthie told us it was time, we gathered around her at Sam’s Place. With a belly full of goodies her health had never allowed her to enjoy, our Queen peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge. It was the gentlest final gift we could give her.
The rescue feels different without her. Her favorite places are too quiet, and we still expect to see that familiar face watching over everything.
But what a life she lived. She survived. She was saved. She was cherished. She ruled an entire rescue and spent her final years knowing how deeply she was loved.
Rest peacefully, Queen Ruthie. A place at Sam’s, and in all our hearts, will always belong to you.
Long live the Queen.
